Is Quartz Really Superior To Granite?

Is quartz really a better countertop material than granite or is the quartz industry trying to brainwash us? Consumer Reports did a great unbiased review that gets to the heart of the granite vs. quartz debate and one countertop material came out on top.

Granite vs. Quartz

You can get beautiful natural looking stone with quartz countertops just like you can with granite. Quartz and granite blocks are both harvested from quarries in the same manner before they are cut into slabs.

Having trouble deciding if you want to dare to be different and get a quartz countertop instead of granite.

No more more sealing granite countertops. Now sealing granite is not that tough of a job but you have to do it religiously about every twelve months. Who can remember to do something like that. I can't even drag my butt outside once a week to mow my lawn. No sealing required with quartz.

Quartz is less porous than granite so food particles and fluids have a harder time getting trapped in quartz that granite countertops. Trapped food harbours bacteria and nobody wants that.

Quartz color choices are very different from granite. With engineered quartz you can get solid colors. Very unrealistic and in my opinion ugly colors. It's nice to have options I guess.

Let's recap:

Consumer Reports did just barely eek out granite in a side by side comparison. It was a very close race for the number one ranking.
